Lute & Chitarrone
Early 17th century solo lute music
(Piccinini, Molinaro, Galilei, Vallet and Kapsperger)
The Fantasia is the first form of European music, which no longer clings to the written word - it sheds the rigidity of the vocal composition. While of course not free from theme or motive, its form is freely conceived. It becomes the expression of an elusive and discreet claiming of a newly discovered individual realm. The emergence of this genre marks a significant historical development, the fruits of which we continue to feel and enjoy today. At the same time it is the birth of purely instrumental - 'absolute' - music.
